FLY FISHING FOR WHAT????

Carp! Eeew, gross, why?

Well at last nights meeting we had Uncle Fuzzy from Westfly come down and speak to our club about fly fishing for Carp.

Considered a “trash fish” in the United States but in Europe it is apparently a top fish and one of the best fish to catch on a fly according to our presentation.

Carp are harder to catch this trout, Uncle Fuzzy said. They are more cautious, they are lazy (so not feeding constantly) and are very selective to when they feed.

Carp do best in waters over 52 degrees and like slow moving or silty muddy waters. They put up a greater fight than Steelhead.

Okay, honestly this presentation took me by surprise, but I can honestly say I Will not purposely go fly fishing for carp. 🐠🐠🐠🐠

I’ve seen them rise for mayflies. Europeans like and eat them.

That is what I heard, have you ever tried them?

      • Happy Bare says:

Yes, They are quite good. Eastern Europeans serve carp for special occasions like Christmas. My mother (Russian) used to cook them up with a tomato sauce. Here’s some more from the internet…

Carp is one of Eastern Europe’s most prized freshwater fish. In the United States, it has never enjoyed the popularity it experiences from Bulgaria to Ukraine, probably because the American variety doesn’t match the flavor or quality of its European cousin, where it is prepared in myriad ways — fried, roasted, grilled and broiled. Carp takes a place of honor on the traditional Christmas Eve table of many countries, including the Polish wigilia. When carp is mixed with other white fish, it becomes gefilte fish, a favorite in Jewish cuisine.
